What is PrEP?
PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication used to prevent HIV infection. When taken as directed, PrEP is extremely effective, reducing the risk of contracting HIV through sexual contact by approximately 99%.
PrEP’s effectiveness decreases if not taken as prescribed, making it essential to follow the recommended schedule. While PrEP offers strong protection against HIV, it does not guard against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Using condoms remains crucial to protect against other STDs and also provides an added layer of HIV prevention if PrEP usage isn’t consistent.
How to Take PrEP
The U.S. Clinical Practice Guidelines (2013) and Thailand’s HIV Prevention Guidelines (2014) recommend daily oral PrEP to prevent HIV transmission. Our PrEP guidance is based on two European studies, both showing an 86% reduction in HIV transmission risk.
- PROUD Study: Daily PrEP. Participants took one Truvada pill each day, and those who adhered correctly did not contract HIV. This is the recommended approach for taking PrEP.
- IPERGAY Study: On-demand PrEP. Participants took 2 Truvada pills 2-24 hours before sex, followed by one pill daily until two days after the last unprotected sex. This method is not recommended for vaginal sex, or for people engaging in chemsex or those with unplanned sexual activity, as it requires precise dosing which some find difficult to maintain.

Your First Visit
Getting PrEP at PULSE is quick and easy, taking just 30 minutes.
- Book a sexual health screening at any PULSE Clinic location (Bangkok, Phuket, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, or Singapore). Your appointment includes a consultation, risk assessment, rapid HIV and syphilis test, and metabolic tests (for kidney and liver function, plus hepatitis B immunity)—all without the need for separate bookings.
- Choose a treatment plan with help from our team, selecting the PrEP option that best suits your lifestyle and health, including options like Truvada, Teno-Em, Ricovir-Em, Tenof-Em, Descovy, Taficita, or Tafero-Em.
- Receive a medical certificate for traveling with PrEP internationally.
- On your first visit, you may receive up to 12 bottles of PrEP.
Please ensure you’re tested for HIV and have not had recent potential exposure, such as unprotected sex or needle-sharing, within 14-21 days before the HIV test.
Your Follow-Up Visit
Regular monitoring is essential to ensure your treatment is effective. Before each PrEP refill, HIV and syphilis screening is required, with kidney and liver function tests conducted twice a year.

- Confirm you are HIV-negative and free from other STDs
